November is a time to celebrate the beauty of adoption, yet birth parents, often the most courageous part of the adoption story, are frequently overlooked.

At Lutheran Family and Children’s Services (LFCS), we are dedicating National Adoption Month to raising awareness of the free, confidential counseling and lifelong support we provide to honor and care for those who make the selfless decision to place their child for adoption.

The True Meaning of Courage and Love

Choosing adoption is one of the most profound and loving decisions a parent can make. It’s a choice made from love and the desire to give a child their best possible future.

“For birth parents, the adoption journey is an act of incredible courage and love,” said Melani Engel, Director of Adoption Services for LFCS. “It’s a decision rooted in deep care for their child’s future, and our mission is to support them before, during, and long after placement.” This perspective reframes the adoption experience. It turns a narrative of loss into one of empowerment and strength.

Modern Adoption: Embracing Openness and Partnership

Adoption has evolved. Today, most adoptions include ongoing relationships between birth and adoptive families, reflecting a more compassionate and connected approach.

According to the National Council for Adoption (NCFA), approximately 95 percent of domestic infant adoptions now include some degree of openness, allowing for continued communication and mutual respect between families.

LFCS’s commitment is strengthened through its partnership with BraveLove, a national nonprofit dedicated to equipping professionals and agencies with resources to better support birth parents.

“Every woman deserves access to the resources and support she needs to make a well-informed decision about her pregnancy and continued care after placement,” said Janelle Basham, Executive Director of BraveLove. “We’re proud to partner with Lutheran Family and Children’s Services in honoring the courage and love shown through adoption, this month and every month.”

Across Missouri—and the country—nonprofits are facing an urgent and unprecedented reality. Operational costs are rising due to inflation, while government contracts and fixed grants have lost their purchasing power. • 87% report increased demand for mental health services, even while struggling to find the staff to provide them.
• Nearly half lack the funds needed to meet client demand.

How LFCS Has Responded

Despite these challenges, LFCS has not stood still. Over the past several years, we have made bold, intentional decisions to grow in response to community need:

• Expanded in-person capacity through office renovations, allowing us to see more clients face-to-face.
• Opened new offices in Kansas City, extending our reach to children and families in Northwest Missouri.
• Prioritized the hiring of counselors, case managers, and social workers to make sure clients are not left waiting for the help they desperately need.
• Expanded our parenting program to strengthen the family unit and reduce the risk of abuse and neglect.

These changes weren’t optional. They were necessary to meet the real needs of Missouri families. But they come at a cost—and that’s where we need your help.

√ Become an expert in your child’s care. If your child’s hair needs special care or styling, dedicate time to learning from professionals or practicing with tutorial videos online.

√ Learn about challenges common to your child’s cultural community. Educate yourself about racism, discrimination, micro-aggressions, and other challenges your child may face as they grow older. Find age-appropriate ways to teach them how to respond when they experience negative comments or attitudes.

√ Look to the birth family for cultural support. Nurturing a positive post-adoption relationship with the birth family can be a valuable source of information and connection to the child’s heritage.

√ Seek professional help. LFCS offers a variety of adoption services for families. Consider expert guidance from our counselors and therapists.

Expanding Adoption Opportunities: A Call for Diverse Families

In addition, to ensure that expectant and birth parents have a diverse pool of families to consider when making an adoption plan, LFCS is currently welcoming adoptive families, with a special emphasis on African American and Hispanic families, to help meet the needs of children in our community. Each year, thousands of children in Missouri experience abuse and neglect, facing challenges that can have lifelong consequences. At Lutheran Family and Children’s Services of Missouri, we recognize Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month in April as an opportunity to raise awareness and advocate for the safety, healing, and well-being of children and families in our communities.

Prevention Through Education, Therapy, and Support
Rather than solely focusing on intervention after abuse has occurred, LFCS prioritizes prevention by equipping parents with the tools they need to build safe and nurturing homes. Our Parenting Program helps families develop healthy parenting strategies, strengthen family bonds, and access valuable community resources.

Research highlights the effectiveness of parenting education in preventing abuse. A systematic review of intervention programs found a significant reduction in physical punishment and harsh discipline, as well as improvements in children’s social interactions, anxiety levels, and behavior. By investing in education and prevention, we can reduce child maltreatment and create a more supportive environment for families.

Mental health counseling is another essential part of breaking the cycle of trauma. Parents who can address underlying issues through therapy can create a more stable, loving home environment for their children. LFCS provides professional counseling services that help parents navigate challenges, heal from past experiences, and develop stronger emotional resilience, ultimately benefiting the entire family.

• Provided 3,347 adoption service hours to connect children with loving families.

These numbers reflect the dedication and hard work of LFCS social workers in ensuring families receive the support they need to thrive.

The Essential Role of Social Workers

According to the National Association of Social Workers, millions of families across the United States face challenges that impact their well-being, from economic hardship to mental health struggles. Social workers serve as advocates, helping individuals navigate complex systems and access the resources they need.

One such advocate is Latizia Williams, who has been with LFCS for 18 years and now serves as Assistant Director of Parenting Services.

“Every day in social work is different, and that’s what I love about it,” said Williams. “From helping a child find a loving adoptive home to supporting a parent struggling with addiction, we have the chance to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Knowing that my work contributes to stronger families and healthier communities is what motivates me.”

In preparation for this story, we asked the current staff of Hilltop Child and Family Development Center to share any insights, stories, or memories they have of L’tanya Harris. The most common sentiments shared were:

For three decades, L’tanya Harris has been a cornerstone of Hilltop Child and Family Development Center, touching countless lives with her unwavering dedication, kindness, and passion for early childhood education. As she celebrates 30 years with Hilltop, we honor her incredible journey and the profound impact she has made on the children, families, and staff in our community.

L’tanya’s story begins in Monroe, Louisiana, where she was born into a family of educators. Inspired by her mother, the first college graduate in her family and a teacher herself, L’tanya developed a deep appreciation for the transformative power of education. After moving to St. Louis at the age of seven, she carried this legacy forward, ultimately joining Hilltop as a Pre-K teacher after first experiencing the center as a parent.

Throughout her tenure, L’tanya has cherished the sense of family that permeates Hilltop—not just because three of her children now work there, but because of the genuine care and connection among her colleagues. “The coworkers are like family and enjoy working with each other,” she says. “It’s a nurturing environment where people truly care about the children and their families”

For her children currently working with her at Hilltop, the were always raised with their mother being the consummate educator. “Sometimes, people were just made to do things”, says Mykell, her youngest daughter, “She was made to be a teacher”. Alyssa, her 2nd youngest daughter, shares the same sentiment. ”She’s been caring for the kids [of Hilltop] pretty much my whole life,’ Alyssa recalls, “She always goes above and beyond but she never thinks she is… its just naturally what she does.”

L’tanya’s commitment to the children at Hilltop has left an indelible mark. She finds immense joy in witnessing her students’ growth and development. “The children who leave the biggest impression on me are those who show tremendous growth,” she shares. “When a child comes into my class barely able to communicate and leaves speaking in full sentences, expressing their feelings and wishes, I feel so proud.”

Her love for teaching is matched by her determination to provide the best for the children at Hilltop. When asked if she ever considered leaving for a “real school” after earning her bachelor’s degree, her response was resolute: “Don’t the children at Hilltop deserve qualified teachers who care?”

Over the years, L’tanya has faced challenges with grace and resilience. She reflects on overcoming obstacles by focusing on what truly matters: “I don’t sweat the small stuff. I ask myself, will this matter next week or next year? If not, I let it go and keep my focus on the children.”

Her favorite memories at Hilltop highlight her warmth and humor. From making personalized sweatshirts for the staff to heartwarming moments with the children—like a little girl singing about her zipper or a curious student questioning why Pete the Cat’s shoes didn’t turn purple when he stepped in blue and red—L’tanya’s stories remind us of the joy and wonder in early childhood education.

As L’tanya reflects on her 30+ years at Hilltop, she hopes to be remembered as someone who treated everyone equally while always being a helper. “I hope I’m remembered as someone who is always willing to help wherever I’m needed…” She says, “as being a fair person and treating all with dignity and respect, regardless of personal feelings.”

Mental health struggles among youth and teens are a growing concern across the nation, but the impact within the African American community is especially alarming. Despite making strides in raising awareness about mental health, systemic inequities, cultural stigmas, and a history of mistrust in healthcare systems continue to pose barriers to access and care.

New federal data reveals even more troubling trends among Black youth. In 2022, the suicide rate among Black youth aged 10 to 19 surpassed that of their White peers for the first time. Since 2018, the rate for Black youth has surged by 54%, compared to a 17% decrease for White youth. From 2007 to 2020, the suicide rate among Black adolescents aged 10 to 17 rose by 144%, making this one of the fastest-growing mental health crises among racial and ethnic groups. The Unique Challenges Facing Black Adolescents

Black adolescents face unique risk factors that exacerbate their vulnerability to mental health challenges:

• Lack of Access and Utilization of Mental Healthcare Disparities in access to mental health services often prevent timely and effective treatment. Historic mistreatment of Black Americans in healthcare has bred mistrust, leaving many hesitant to seek professional help.
• Exposure to Racism and Discrimination Experiences of racism and discrimination can lead to feelings of hopelessness and depression. Yet, Black adolescents are significantly less likely than their peers in other demographic groups to receive care for depression.
• Economic Inequality Financial hardships and living in impoverished conditions increase stress and limit access to mental health resources, perpetuating cycles of untreated mental illness.

• Community Violence and Trauma Exposure to violence within communities can result in trauma, a significant risk factor for suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
• Mental Health Stigma Many Black families address mental health issues privately, rather than seeking external professional help, due to stigma and mistrust of the healthcare system. Adolescents may also fear being teased by peers for receiving mental health treatment. (Source: Newport Academy)

Psychiatry is particularly effective for managing conditions such as ADHD, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, Psychotic Symptoms, and Anxiety. Psychiatrists conduct comprehensive evaluations and develop personalized treatment plans, which may include prescribing medications to stabilize symptoms. Follow-up sessions are typically less frequent than counseling sessions and focus on reviewing and adjusting treatment as needed.
