Every April, Lutheran Family and Children’s Services (LFCS) observes Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month to encourage every Missourian to help keep children safe. Prevention isn’t just about spotting the bad. It’s about strengthening families and providing the support they need so the “bad” never happens in the first place. Most people believe they would recognize abusive behavior if it were happening, but what if you were put on the spot? Would you feel comfortable observing a situation and knowing when to call and what to report?

In Missouri, the Children’s Division receives more than 154,000 hotline reports each year, according to the latest data from the Missouri Department of Social Services. Advocates say many cases of abuse or neglect may go unreported because people are unsure what qualifies as abuse or how to report concerns.

While many people have the best of intentions, it can be difficult to recognize the signs of abuse or neglect or to know when to report concerns. In response, LFCS developed a child abuse and neglect prevention checklist to help individuals better understand when and how concerning behavior should be reported.

Child Abuse Prevention and Reporting Checklist

√ Know the warning signs. Unexplained injuries, sudden changes in behavior, fear of certain adults, or signs of neglect such as poor hygiene or hunger can indicate a child may need help.

√ Trust your instincts. You do not need proof to make a report, only a reasonable suspicion that a child may be experiencing abuse or neglect.

√ Save the hotline number. Keep the Missouri Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline (1-800-392-3738) saved in your phone so you can act quickly if concerns arise.

√ If a child tells you something, listen calmly. Thank them for telling you, avoid asking leading questions, and report the concern so trained professionals can follow up.

√ Write down what you noticed. Record observations such as injuries, statements, or concerning behaviors to help provide clear information when making a report.

√ Remember that reporting starts the process. Hotline staff will ask basic questions about the child, the parents, and the situation to determine whether further investigation is needed.

While we often picture bullying on the playground or in the school hallway, the reality is that for many young people today, bullying has moved online, becoming a constant and pervasive threat.

New data reveals a concerning rise in cyberbullying, with more than half of teens reporting they have experienced some form of it. Platforms like YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok, which are central to modern social life, are often where this emotional harm unfolds. Unlike traditional bullying that might end at the school bell, cyberbullying is a 24/7 issue that can follow a child into the safety of their home, leading to severe anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.

It often takes the form of spreading rumors, sharing embarrassing photos or screenshots, or, perhaps most painfully, intentionally excluding someone from online group chats and social circles. In a world where a child’s social life is increasingly lived online, this kind of exclusion can be devastating.

Talk, and more importantly, listen. Create a safe space where your child feels comfortable sharing their digital life, including both the positive and the challenging aspects. Ask open-ended questions about their friends, what they’re seeing online, and how specific platforms make them feel.

Set healthy boundaries. Work with your child to establish a family media plan. This isn’t about punishment but about setting healthy habits. Consider “device-free” times, or having all devices charged in a common area overnight.

Know the signs. Be aware of changes in your child’s behavior. Are they becoming withdrawn or secretive about their device use? Are they showing signs of depression or anxiety? These could be red flags that something is wrong.

Be a digital role model. Show your children what respectful online behavior looks like. Think before you post, and model kindness and empathy in your own digital interactions.

August is here, and with it comes National Wellness Month. It serves as a valuable reminder that proper health means more than just physical fitness. It encompasses our emotional resilience, social connections, and the overall well-being of our families. While August shines the spotlight on these crucial aspects, at LFCS, we believe that wellness is a year-round journey. We are dedicated to supporting Missouri families every day, regardless of the challenges they face.

Support Without Roadblocks

Unfortunately, accessing vital mental health and wellness support can often feel like an uphill battle. Common roadblocks like excessive costs, the stigma surrounding mental health, or simply a lack of awareness about available services prevent many families from getting the care they need.

At LFCS, we are actively breaking down these barriers. We believe that wellness should not depend on your income or where you live. We offer free and low-cost support across Missouri, ensuring that families can access essential care without roadblocks. Our mission is to make sure every family feels safe, supported, and connected.

Rather than solely focusing on intervention after abuse has occurred, LFCS prioritizes prevention by equipping parents with the tools they need to build safe and nurturing homes. Our Parenting Program helps families develop healthy parenting strategies, strengthen family bonds, and access valuable community resources.

Research highlights the effectiveness of parenting education in preventing abuse. A systematic review of intervention programs found a significant reduction in physical punishment and harsh discipline, as well as improvements in children’s social interactions, anxiety levels, and behavior. By investing in education and prevention, we can reduce child maltreatment and create a more supportive environment for families.

Mental health counseling is another essential part of breaking the cycle of trauma. Parents who can address underlying issues through therapy can create a more stable, loving home environment for their children. LFCS provides professional counseling services that help parents navigate challenges, heal from past experiences, and develop stronger emotional resilience, ultimately benefiting the entire family.

In preparation for this story, we asked the current staff of Hilltop Child and Family Development Center to share any insights, stories, or memories they have of L’tanya Harris. The most common sentiments shared were:

Truly loves the kids and the staff of Hilltop

A great role model

Always willing to help

Has everything you need or knows all the answers to your questions

Goes above and beyond

Humble

Consistent

For three decades, L’tanya Harris has been a cornerstone of Hilltop Child and Family Development Center, touching countless lives with her unwavering dedication, kindness, and passion for early childhood education. As she celebrates 30 years with Hilltop, we honor her incredible journey and the profound impact she has made on the children, families, and staff in our community.

L’tanya’s story begins in Monroe, Louisiana, where she was born into a family of educators. Inspired by her mother, the first college graduate in her family and a teacher herself, L’tanya developed a deep appreciation for the transformative power of education. After moving to St. Louis at the age of seven, she carried this legacy forward, ultimately joining Hilltop as a Pre-K teacher after first experiencing the center as a parent.

Shortly after, she received an opportunity that she could not pass up. “The director [at Hilltop] asked me if I knew anyone that wanted a job. I told her I did!” Ever since then, L’tanya has been a Pre-K teacher for the children at Hilltop. This started her journey of making Hilltop her home and positively impacting the children in her care.

For her children currently working with her at Hilltop, the were always raised with their mother being the consummate educator. “Sometimes, people were just made to do things”, says Mykell, her youngest daughter, “She was made to be a teacher”. Alyssa, her 2nd youngest daughter, shares the same sentiment. ”She’s been caring for the kids [of Hilltop] pretty much my whole life,’ Alyssa recalls, “She always goes above and beyond but she never thinks she is… its just naturally what she does.”

Over the years, L’tanya has faced challenges with grace and resilience. She reflects on overcoming obstacles by focusing on what truly matters: “I don’t sweat the small stuff. I ask myself, will this matter next week or next year? If not, I let it go and keep my focus on the children.”

Too often, we underemphasize the role of “Dad” when it comes to raising a family. Traditionally, Mothers are presumed to take on more responsibilities and have higher expectations than Fathers do, with regard to child-rearing. The role of the Father Figure has evolved over time, and today’s Fathers are stepping up in ways that other generations previously haven’t. While family dynamics are subjective for each couple, overall, Fathers are more present, more attentive, and more involved in the lives of their children than in previous years. With Father’s Day quickly approaching, LFCS wants to highlight the importance of Fathers and Father Figures to the health and stability of the modern family.

Unlike previous generations, many fathers today are equally involved in parenting of the children and upkeep of the household. This not only gives their children a healthy example of what a balanced relationship looks like, it also improves the connection between the husband and wife. In a study of married couples who just had their first child, there was an overall decrease in stress for both partners when the father took the time to contribute to the tasks of raising a newborn.* This equal involvement helps lighten the expectations of the mother while creating more bonding opportunities between the father and their baby.

During one’s early years, the Father serves as one of the most important role models for their kids. A child’s brain is extremely observant and sensitive to early relational experiences; making a child’s relationship with their father critical during this time. These early interactions between a baby and their father develops a standard for what relationships should look like moving forward. Healthy Father-Child relationships tend to build higher levels of self-esteem and confidence in the child, which leads to more stable relationships in adulthood.** Unhealthy Father-Child relationships create more distress, trauma, and anxiety, which can lead to trouble forming healthy relationships throughout a child’s life.

With research showing the importance of both parents being present and involved early in a child’s life, Fathers are redefining their traditional expectations. Fathers are not only being more involved, they are opening up to being emotionally available. A 2018 study conducted by BYU & Ball State of over 2,100 fathers across the nation found that the majority of men engaged more with their children than their fathers did and they viewed “exhibiting warmth to their child” as a characteristic of their personality. “Today’s dads spend more time, provide more care and are more loving to their kids than ever before,” says study co-author Kevin Shafer. “Most dads see themselves as playing an equally important role in helping their children as mothers do.”

“As current social trends are pushing for men’s increased familial involvement, we see more fathers stepping up to engage more actively in their children’s lives in various ways.”
Lee Essig
BYU Study Co-Author

Whether it’s Dad, Step-Dad, Grandpa or another title, the role of the Father Figure is becoming more and more important. Men may shy away from this responsibility or feel like they are not able to be the Father they envision for their child. Remember: progress, not perfection! Change is about moving forward and today’s fathers should be applauded for their development. Thank you to all the Father and Father Figures out there! LFCS is proud of you and everything you do for your family.

The post An Ode To the Modern Dad first appeared on Lutheran Family and Children's Services of Missouri.
