When Rayna Ewell joined Lutheran Family and Children’s Services (LFCS) in 1996, “HR” meant one coordinator, a stack of paper checks, and a lot of institutional faith. Nearly three decades later, LFCS is a statewide organization, and Rayna helped build the infrastructure that made that growth possible. Her leadership has always been rooted in our values, in making sure every employee feels valued, and in building systems that create lasting value for the families we serve. We sat down with Rayna to reflect on her journey, the grit required to navigate a global pandemic, and why truly knowing your people is the foundation of any strong organization.

You have been with LFCS since 1996. What did the landscape look like when you started compared to your role as chief administrative officer today?

It’s funny to look back. When I started, there was no formal HR department; there was only a coordinator position. Everything was paper-driven and manual. I remember telling my supervisor, “We aren’t meeting legal compliance; we need a structure.” He gave me free rein to build it, and I just started creating. Since then, we have grown from a small, local team into a true statewide organization. My role has evolved from managing files to sitting on the senior leadership team, helping shape strategy for our entire workforce.

You mentioned moving away from paper. What was the “game-changer” for how LFCS operates behind the scenes?

Implementing our first Human Resources Information System (HRIS). Before we had this specialized software to manage our data, we did payroll entirely in-house, printing physical checks ourselves. It was a lot of pressure because tax and employment laws change so fast. I advocated for a digital system because we needed to be proactive. That shift allowed us to standardize our processes as we expanded into more regions. It took the “mystery” out of HR and gave us time to focus on what mattered most, supporting our employees.

Every leader is tested at some point. Which period required the most “grit” from you and your team?

COVID. The laws were changing daily, and as an essential business, we had to figure out how to keep social workers safe while they visited homes. There was no manual for that. It took a village. Our HR team and senior leadership team were in the trenches together every day. It forced us to rethink what “flexibility” really means. We realized our people could work effectively in a hybrid setup, and that shift has been a long-term win for employee welfare.

For an industry where burnout is common, what is a specific moment that reminds you why you’ve dedicated 30 years to this agency?

It is how we care for our own. Years ago, a staff member lost her son in a tragedy. I saw this organization step in beyond anything I had ever seen in the corporate world. The agency supported her financially, and our staff even donated their own vacation and sick time so she could grieve without the weight of work. That’s where our values come to life. It’s about making sure every person feels valued in their darkest moments.

You’ve mentored many people who are now HR directors and leaders elsewhere. What is your philosophy on leadership?

I’ve always wanted my legacy to be “bringing people up.” Because we are a relatively flat organization, I know that for some of my team, moving up eventually means moving on. I view that as a success. If I can coach someone from generalist to director, I have added value to their life and to our industry. My advice to my younger self would be to “slow down and enjoy the process.” Early on, I was so focused on building the future that I did not always stop to appreciate the amazing things we were setting up in that moment.

You are also very active in the community. How do you spend your time outside of office hours?

I love helping people find their path. For years, I’ve volunteered at my church, helping folks with resumes and interview skills. I also worked with a local veteran organization on Verterans Day. Helping a veteran translate their military service into a resume that a civilian manager understands is a passion of mine. It is just another way to use what I’ve learned here to serve others.

Explore Careers at LFCS If you are looking for a mission-driven culture where our values are lived out every day, where every employee is truly valued, and where your work creates lasting value for Missouri families, we invite you to explore our current career opportunities

Our Young Professinoals board brings fresh leadership to support Missouri families across the state. Established in 2025, the group is cultivating a new generation of advocates dedicated to serving the St. Louis area and other communities statewide. Now in 2026, the YPB is laying an even stronger foundation to advance our mission.

We spoke with Anna Kappel, Program Coordinator at Guardian Angel Settlement Association and President of the Young Professionals board, about how they are putting our core values into action.

Q: What specific moment made you want to lead the Young Professionals board?

“The moment happened about a year ago at a networking event. What stood out was the unique opportunity to help shape a new board from the ground up for an organization doing such meaningful work. As a social worker, the idea immediately resonated. It felt like an exciting way to serve the community in a different capacity than my day-to-day work with older adults. Working alongside our Vice President, Natalie Sullivan, I realized that this experience would support my own professional growth while creating a space for other young leaders to deepen their connection to the community.”

Q: A core theme for LFCS in 2026 is the ‘Three Vs.’ How is the Young Professional’s board championing these principles?

“I see our values in how the group operates. There is a strong sense of compassion and purpose that guides us. Integrity also plays a big role. We share an understanding of accountability and transparency that ensures our work feels respected and meaningful. We are also uniquely positioned to champion Value. We create a space where individual skills and field-specific experiences are intentionally used. By combining diverse professional backgrounds, we turn individual strengths into shared impact.

At its core, feeling valued starts with our culture. Because we are in the early stages, we can set clear expectations for how we treat one another, recognize contributions, and ensure every member has a voice. We want an environment where people feel seen for who they are, not just what they offer.”

“A strong foundation. Everything we are focused on in 2026, from building clear structures and defining committees, is about making sure the board feels stable and intentional. Our success this year will be measured by the strength of the foundation we build for the future.”

Q: You have a busy year ahead. What is on the calendar for Young Professionals in 2026?

“We are kicking off with our first formal board meeting in February to launch our committees. In March, we’re hosting a St. Louis networking event for young professionals. Throughout the summer, we have volunteer opportunities planned so members can experience LFCS’s impact firsthand.”

*A note from LFCS: We featured an article in the Fall edition of the Spirit newsletter, which unfortunately had a few errors. We are honored to share with you the incredible story of Nellie Miller and her family’s multi-generational impact, which changed the lives of countless children and families and has strengthened our community for over 80 years!

Nellie Miller (Grandmother of our dear LFCS Friend & lifelong supporter, Rae Mohrmann) – was the first of five generations to become involved with Lutheran Family and Children’s Services, formerly known as the Lutheran Children’s Home in Des Peres, Missouri. Born in 1890, Nellie was the youngest of seven kids, as well as the only girl, so she had no choice but to grow up tough with six older brothers! She started her college journey right after high school, a bold move for a woman of her time. Nellie was determined to get an education and have a meaningful life.

After college, Nellie went on to marry William A. Miller who owned Miller Elevator Co. Unfortunately Nellie’s husband William passed away in 1939, leaving her a widow. Because Nellie’s husband died during the Great Depression, she knew she had to be a fighter and get a job to survive on her own.

Despite having a college education, Nellie’s job opportunities were limited. She eventually found work as a matron at the Lutheran Children’s Home. She began her journey at the orphanage by performing cleaning duties and steadily advancing as a cook. Nellie worked extremely hard and became a reliable, loving force in the lives of the children of the orphanage, and became integral in the daily operations of the organization.

The Miller Family – far right – with the kids at the Lutheran Orphange- Circa 1940’s

Through all of her hard work and commitment, one thing always remained the same – her love and impeccable care of the children at the orphanage. Her steadfast compassion and commitment to children and families spanned three decades, culminating in her retirement as Assistant Director at the age of 78. Today, Nellie’s profound impact on LFCS is commemorated with a plaque at Des Peres City Hall, which once housed the orphanage she dedicated her life to. In the late 1960s, the Lutheran Children’s Home became Lutheran Family and Children’s Services (LFCS).

Nellie Miller at the Orphanage – 1965

Continuing her legacy, Nellie’s children also devoted their time and efforts to LFCS, carrying on her commitment to helping others. Nellie’s granddaughter, Rae, would often join her parents and visited the orphanage to volunteer. Those early memories of giving back introduced a love of service and a lifelong commitment to honoring the LFCS mission- one to which she is still very much committed. Rae’s son Gregg and his wife Kara are also dedicated supporters, and her hope is for her grandchildren to become the next generation to follow in the family tradition of serving the children and families in our community.

This family’s story is a testament to the enduring power of giving. For over 80 years, they have dedicated their time, talents, and resources to empower children and families, helping them overcome challenges today to build a better tomorrow. Their legacy of service is an inspiration to us all.

The post Five Generations of Service to LFCS – Honoring the late Nellie Miller first appeared on Lutheran Family and Children's Services of Missouri.

This year was an exceptionally successful year for Lutheran Family and Children’s Services. From regional expansion to new offices, grants to graduations, LFCS has been blessed to increase our impact throughout Missouri. As we close this year out, we wanted to reflect on the memorable moments that took place; as well as look ahead to what’s in store for 2024.

Each region experienced a momentous occasion this year. First and foremost, we were proud to open our brand new office in Kansas City! We have been expanding our K.C. staff throughout the year and will continue to plant our roots in the communities of Northwest Missouri. In Southwest Missouri, we moved our Joplin staff into a much larger, more accessible space. Clients can now be seen in house and we can respond to the increased demand for services. Not to be outdone, our Columbia office is also moving into a new space. Both Springfield and Cape received grants to improve their current locations. These renovations have allowed us to see more clients, provide more programs, and hire more staff to answer the call for help.

Twenty-six preschoolers graduated this past May, with parents and staff cheering them onto kindergarten. We are so proud of the Hilltop staff and their dedication. Through implementing the Caring Congregation award program, we were able to thank 45 different congregations for their advocacy, donations, and support of our services.

We are so thankful for everyone who helped make this year such a success. More importantly, we are not staying complacent in our achievements. Next year, we have more big changes coming: expanding mental health services, upgrading our website, a larger presence in the media and the community and much more. LFCS has heard the outcry for more services from churches, families, schools, and community leaders. We plan to continue to provide our proven services to all families in need, but we can’t do it without your help. From multiple fires demolishing our buildings to adding multiple services to support families, it was an unforgettable journey. In fact, it wasn’t until 1968 (exactly 100 years since Rev. Buenger made that initial promise) that we took on the name Lutheran Family and Children’s Services of Missouri. This name change was important because it marked the beginning of our next big endeavor: providing our life-changing services throughout the state of Missouri.

Prior to 1968, LFCS only provides services for those in the St. Louis area. It was during this name change that our agency expanded our care for children and families across this great state. After five years of planning, fund-raising, and partnering, LFCS opened its first satellite office in Cape Girardeau in 1973. This September makes the 50th anniversary of providing parenting services & parenting education, youth prevention, and counseling services for Southeast Missouri. Since its opening, LFCS has become a pillar of the community in Cape Girardeau. We have had unwavering support from the Lutheran churches, community leaders, and clients who have experienced sustainable change in their lives.

Since the opening of the Southeast Missouri office in 1973, LFCS has been on a mission to truly be a statewide agency. After seeing the resounding success of our services in Cape, we began our 50-year journey to provide our services in every geographical area across the state. Thanks to your faithful support, we have been able to open offices in Columbia (1995), Springfield (1998), Franklin County (2010), Joplin (2011), St. Charles County (2012) and Kansas City (2023). We are proud to support every area of Missouri with services that save lives, strengthen families and enrich communities.

Our ability to expand is a direct reflection of the support we received from these communities. Lutheran churches, local advocacy & fundraisers, partnerships and individual donors worked together to address the issues plaguing their communities. Their dedication, hard work and generosity are the reason why LFCS is able to care for children and families throughout Missouri. On behalf of Lutheran Family and Children’s Service, thank you for allowing us the privilege to serve within your community!

Every story has a beginning, and the story of Lutheran Family and Children’s Services (LFCS) starts with one man: Rev. Johann Friedrich Buenger. Born on January 2, 1810, Rev. Buenger was an influential spiritual leader known for his compassion and ambition. To celebrate Rev. Buenger’s birthday, we would like to share some history about our founder and how his life shaped our core values as an organization.

Rev. Buenger came from a family of Lutheran pastors that dated back to the Reformation. Born and raised in Germany, he came to America in 1839 and began his life of service. Before founding LFCS, Rev. Buenger also:

Co-Founded Log Cabin College (Altenburg, MO)

Presided over Trinity Lutheran (St. Louis) and Immanuel Lutheran Church (Olivette, MO)

Helped establish the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in 1847 (St. Louis, MO)

Assisted in the creation of The Lutheran hospital of St. Louis in 1858. (St. Louis, MO)

In 1844, Rev. Buenger married Rosa Mueller and together they had three children. Tragedy struck the Buenger family in1849 when a cholera epidemic took the lives of Rosa and all three of his children. In spite of his loss, Buenger remained faithful to his mission of serving God through serving others. He eventually married Joanna Reissner and was father to Johanna, Catherine, Maria, and Agnes.

In 1868, during the Civil War, a wounded Union solder made a plea to Rev. Buenger to care for his 10-year-old-son. The boy’s mother had died and the solder knew it would be months before he would be well enough to care for his son. Rev. Buenger promised to help. He used his Lutheran network to find a schoolteacher to care for the boy, but needed $10 per month to provide adequate care. The story of the soldier’s son spread and soon donations from all over arrived to help care for this child. This is how LFCS was born.

Courageous faith, impeccable integrity, service excellence, strong teams, and innovative ideas. These are the five core values of Lutheran Family and Children’s Service of Missouri and are directly inspired from our founder’s life. Happy Birthday Rev. Buenger! We are honored to carry on the legacy you began 155 years ago.
