Detecting Depression in Children and Adolescents

Have you ever wondered if your child was just having a bad week or if they might be depressed?  Even as a parent or family member, it can be hard to tell the difference.  Below is a list of warning signs for depression:
  • Depressed mood that lasts longer than 2 weeks
  • Irritable or agitated mood that is not normal for your child
  • Change in eating or sleeping habits
  • Withdrawn from friends and family
  • Lack of interest in activities that he or she once enjoyed
  • Drop in grades or inability to concentrate in school
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Negative or hopeless outlook on the future
  • Suicidal thoughts

If you suspect that your child may be depressed there is help available!  The good news about depression is that it is very treatable.  Over 90% of people who seek help for depression report an increase in mood and quality of life after receiving treatment.  To seek help - please contact your child's school counselor.  LFCS also offers counseling to children and families struggling with depression.  To make an appointment with an LFCS counselor call (314) 787-5100 and ask for the Intake Department.
