What is Camp Noah?
Camp Noah is a weeklong, faith-based day camp offered for elementary-age children in grades K-6 who have experienced disaster. It is staffed by trained camp counselors and is supported additionally by a local mental health professional. Camp Noah combines disaster recovery support for children with fun-filled recreation to form a unique and healing experience!
Is Camp Noah fun?
You bet it is! It’s a week filled with friends, fun activities, cool counselors and lots of smiles! One camper said she wished that Camp Noah could last forever!
Do children really need additional support after a disaster?
Children often are portrayed as highly resilient. Yet, experts say that, of all people affected by disaster, children are among the most emotionally vulnerable. Research shows that children need intervention following a disaster to reduce trauma-related symptoms.
Does Camp Noah really help?
In 2003 the Mississippi Center for Disease Control and Prevention did a multi-state evaluation of Camp Noah’s effectiveness. There results indicated that after attending camp, “examples of behavioral and symptom changes included children being calmer, better able to speak about what happened to them, sleeping through the night, and having stopped regressive behaviors.
How can Camp Noah be offered in my area?
Camp Noah, a program created by Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, is offered through the generous support of a variety of ecumenical and secular partners. The camp is offered at no cost to families who have been through a disaster. The program is made possible through the generous support from donors and volunteers.
