LFCS Works with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
One in 68 U.S. children has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a 30% increase from 1 in 88 two years ago, according to a new report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The new statistics raise significant concerns about access to care, because autism is a lifelong disorder and the need for services only begins at diagnosis.
“Behind these numbers are real people,” says Robert Ring, Chief science Officer for the advocacy group Autism Speaks. “Every one of these numbers is a family that’s coming to terms with the implications of the diagnosis for the lifespan of their loved one.”
LFCS’s School Based Counseling department has 37 licensed clinicians embedded in over 40 St. Louis County schools, public and parochial, Pre-K through grade 12. These School Counselors work with dozens of kids on the spectrum every day who struggle with social, emotional, and classroom issues. They partner with parents and teachers to educate them about ASDs and to facilitate changes that can further support these students at home and at school.
